Health & Safety

For some 30 years, workplace safety and health protection have been among the most important concerns at Austria’s pulp and paper mills.

Health and Safty is an integrated part of the management systems of the mills.

Since 1986 the Austrian paper industry has been keeping and analysing statistical records on workplace accidents. Over the past ten years, accident figures have fallen by more than 80 per cent. This reflects the companies’ commitment to greatly improving their performance in this field. Meanwhile, workplace safety has become an integrated part of company culture and management systems. The achievement of workplace safety goals is assigned the same importance as other company goals. Cooperation with the Austrian Social Insurance for Occupational Risks has been exemplary.

More Than Just the Absence of Disease

The logical consequence was the creation of the working group for health protection and promotion three years ago. Health is not just an absence of illness but the presence of physical, mental and social wellbeing. Employee health is highly dependent on conditions in the workplace, but also on the personal attitude of the employees. The goal of the working group was to improve workplace organisation and conditions as well as to create a company culture that takes into account the capacity of the individual and creates room for self-fulfilment and identification.
