The transport volume of the Austrian paper industry is 17 million tonnes. That is the result of the growing production of fibres, paper, folding boxboard and paperboard, as well as the raw materials necessary to make them. Two-thirds of this transport volume is related to receiving supplies of raw materials and consumables and one third to delivering finished products.
High share of rail transport
The average share of rail transport in recent years has been between 45 and 46 per cent. Contributing to this situation has been a series of joint projects. One of them is the eco-partnership between Rail Cargo Austria and the forestry, wood and paper industry. By way of comparison, rail has only a thirteen-per-cent share of Europe-wide transport. Within the framework of logistics concepts, Rail Cargo Austria will continue to work with the paper industry to improve the quality of its offers while observing rigorous cost management. However, because some customers lack rail connections, it is not always possible to respond in this manner to their transport volumes.
